Peach State says: Back to School…You’ve Made a Mistake!

20120728-073604.jpg

Teachers to meet, classes to find.
Retracing the steps left behind.
Four days left, back to the grind.
Time to bring order to the mind.

Summer’s still here, for goodness sake.
I wish I was going to the lake.
Early to bed, and early I wake,
To catch the school bus I have to take.

Pencils and pens, paper all lined.
New shoes for the stairs I will climb.
Notebooks and folders, paper will bind.
Here are the forms for you to sign!

This can’t be real! See the date!
It is time for more memories to make.
Mom just smiles, “Don’t be late!”
“Back to School…You’ve Made a Mistake!”

This was based on some of the phrases my soon to be 6th Grader has said since yesterday. School starts August 1st…Wednesday and that is four days away. He really has mixed feelings about school starting. Can you see that in these thoughts? We met the teachers yesterday and the topic was the same among the parents and kids….”It seems early this year!”…”Can I go see my friends?”…these questions could be heard all around us. The good news is that we will have a week off in September so the first official countdown has begun. “Sorry…I still tend to think like a teacher.”

When do your kids start school? Are you ready for what the new year will bring?

I am glad I only have one going to school…which means only one stack of forms to sign. Yes…yes…yes! I hope you enjoy this end of Summer with your family….Have a great day!

About justbetweencousins

We are first cousins who live farther apart from each other than we would like. We thought this blog would give us a chance to visit with each other as well as maybe share a few insights about life. We are both middle aged and until recently both of us had kids the same age (nearly grown). But then the Peach State cuz adopted a son, so she has four now. Heart of Dixie cuz has two daughters. We have a couple of things which are prominently in common (although I'm sure there are actually more): We vacation at our Mema's beach house in Panama City Beach, Florida - until recently, we did so with all of our kids. We both sing - although Heart of Dixie cuz is not currently singing anywhere right now. We both write. We are both Christians, although Peach State cuz is Baptist, and Heart of Dixie is currently floating about between the Anglican church, the Methodist church, and the Episcopalian church. Long story.

  1. Ha, ha! Love the poem! I will be getting up early every morning, as well. Not only going to the bus stop every morning to keep my 8th grade granddaughter company, but also driving my four year old granddaughter to pre k on the mornings I don’t have my Little Man. Guess I am as ready as I’ll ever be. I hope your youngest’s school year goes well!

  3. Aug. 1 is much, much too early!! It seems like we’re just getting into our lazy summer groove up here in Penn, We head back the Wed. after Labor Day each year. That’s Sept.–hurray! Alas, we get NO spring break and don’t get out till a week or so after Memorial Day each year, unless snow days delay it further. But I like the late start. My husband? He’d like mid-Aug. better.
