Peach State says: Another Current Event Friday

So what can we do? Banks are failing and going out of business. Small businesses are going under because they can’t get funding from the banks. Americans lose their jobs and can’t find jobs to replace the ones lost. The cost of living is on the rise…I do not like this picture! Do you?
The sad thing is that the cost of gas is going up….quickly! The news reported that it is expected to reach $5.00 this summer. So for those of us planning on taking a vacation close to home…get ready to dig deep! “Another Current Event Friday!”

Let’s talk about Gas Prices and jobs! They go hand in hand…Right?

At this rate the only vacation most Americans will be able to afford is the trip to the gas station and grocery store. “I guess we will actually save money…no souvenirs will have to be bought!”. We have not been able to go on a vacation in almost 4 years…it just cost toooo much. I am glad at least that the bills are being paid.

The National News Industry reports that the Unemployment Rate is down…but is that really a true reflection of the joblessness in America. How many Americans are not able to receive Unemployment or have stopped looking altogether? With these two groups included in the percentage the report would reflect a darker picture. “I am saddened as I wonder how they can afford to put gas in their car to look for jobs.”. What a vicious circle! Need money to pay for gas…need a job to get money…need money to find a job…no job…no money..no gas!

The Federal Government says they know and understand the situation most Americans find themselves…Really! They take vacations and travel all over the country. They eat whenever they want and where ever they want. They do not even have to show up for work and they get paid. Do their families have to worry about putting gas in their cars or finding a job? “I wish we could find this tasty tidbit of information reported by the news.”

There are many influences into the price of gas. The pipelines and manufacturers in this country could release more oil and gas…lowering the price…employ more people to expand their abilities to produce more oil and gas…”Oh wait…we can’t become dependent on ourselves for the oil and gas we need in this country! “I forgot!”.

So how will you get through this financial belt tightening this summer? Will you avoid the vacation to save money and use it to pay for the gas needed everyday to get back and forth to work? Yep! “Us too!”

About justbetweencousins

We are first cousins who live farther apart from each other than we would like. We thought this blog would give us a chance to visit with each other as well as maybe share a few insights about life. We are both middle aged and until recently both of us had kids the same age (nearly grown). But then the Peach State cuz adopted a son, so she has four now. Heart of Dixie cuz has two daughters. We have a couple of things which are prominently in common (although I'm sure there are actually more): We vacation at our Mema's beach house in Panama City Beach, Florida - until recently, we did so with all of our kids. We both sing - although Heart of Dixie cuz is not currently singing anywhere right now. We both write. We are both Christians, although Peach State cuz is Baptist, and Heart of Dixie is currently floating about between the Anglican church, the Methodist church, and the Episcopalian church. Long story.

  1. Wow! That picture says it well! We have had to tighten our belts for a while as well! We wanted to go to Virginia this past weekend to attend the wedding of the man who was my husband’s best man at our wedding almost 37 years ago, but we couldn’t afford to go. The current price of gas was a big part of that decision. I probably shouldn’t get too much on my soapbox about the current state of affairs in this once great country, because you might be forced to delete my comment if I speak my mind about it! I will say this…we have got to get this socialist president out of office! His evil minions need to go as well! I am not altogether happy about the candidates running against him, but any one of them would be a vast improvement over the current regime!

Okay, I’ll say more: The reported unemployment numbers are nothing but a BIG LIE! I’ve never seen so many people in need! I have always had people come up to me in public to ask me for money, but it didn’t happen nearly so often until this last year or two. Recently, one couple said that they needed only $13 to meet their rent payment, otherwise they were going to be kicked out. They had been driving around store parking lots begging for money all day. So, I gave them the $13.00. Do I question if they are telling the truth about about their need? Of course! I don’t know them or their true needs, but I’ll tell you this, I’ve never seen two people more grateful for $13.00 in my whole life. It breaks my heart.

For the first time in our lives, my husband and I are without health insurance. Being out of work for several months with nothing coming in, we went through what was left of our retirement, and had to borrow a little. When he finally did get a job, he had to take a significant pay cut. We are doing better, but still cannot afford health insurance. That’s another racket! Oh, I know…socialized medicine…hmmm. Yeah, because it has worked SO well in other countries? Why don’t we just fix our broken system instead of breaking the backs of the American taxpayers?

We are almost at the point of no return. I know that there are truly people in need, but I know many people who can work, but don’t. They get all kinds of government handouts while people who work are struggling because they make a couple of dollars more (before taxes and insurance are deducted) than the cut-off for handouts! Now there are too many lazy people with their hands in the pockets of the taxpayers. They are voting to keep getting handouts; and now they outnumber the working taxpayers according to some polls. That is just plain sorriness! BUT, it’s politically correct! It’s a sad, sad state we are in!

And lastly…DRILL HERE, DRILL NOW! (Not that I don’t have more to say…another day!)
